Description of Thesis

Augusta Treverorum/Trier is one of the biggest settlements in Gaul.
With more then 285 ha of walled area, 6400 m of city walls and at least three mighty ditches it had one of the biggest city fortifications in the whole Roman Empire.
Still today very well known is the northern Gate ("Porta Nigra"), which is extraordinary well preserved three floors high to 27 m.

The phD thesis will collect and analyse all archaeological evidence from 1844 on.
Besides the comparison to other (gaul) city fortifcations, the thesis will handle with particular questions to the building process like (1) which ressources have been used (2), where did the come from, (3) how have they been transported, (4) how was the building process organized and (5) which costs (hours per men) did the fortification cause?

As a first result, a project-based excavation in 2017 proofed wooden remains from the building process of the  wall.
These have been dendrochronologically dated on 169/170 AD, which is for the very first a very accurate date (Ch. Lindner, in: Funde und Ausgrabungen in Trier 50, 2018 (forthcoming).
