Here you will find the FAQs on the credits.
Please note that your module handbook is the first point of contact for questions regarding the organization of your studies. In addition, the most important information about starting your studies will be presented during the first semester welcome and counseling at the beginning of October.
We have compiled the most frequently asked questions and answers for you here in advance. Please note that this information mainly relates to the Bachelor's degree program in Classical Archaeology and Archaeology of the Roman Provinces.

FAQ
Am I responsible for organizing my studies myself?
Yes, you are responsible for organizing your studies (including creating your schedule) independently. When selecting courses, refer to your module handbook. At the end of the document, you will find additional useful resources, such as ideal study plans and checklists.
Which courses should I attend at the beginning of my studies?
Basic Module 1 and Basic Module 2 are considered orientation modules and are mandatory for all archaeology students. Each module consists of 4 compulsory courses. Please note that Basic Module 1 is only offered in the winter semester, while Basic Module 2 is only offered in the summer semester.
How many courses should I take per semester?
Each semester, it is recommended to complete approx. 30 credit points in the single-major Bachelor's program and around 15 credit points per subject in the dual-major Bachelor's program. As a rule of thumb, an average of 7 courses per semester, equivalent to 14 contact hours per week (SWS), can be planned. Typically, one course equals 2 contact hours per week. A common combination for the first semester in the single-major Bachelor's program would be the entire Basic Module 1, an additional lecture course, and up to two seminars with presentations (and at most one term paper).
Please note that language requirements may also need to be fulfilled during the first semesters.
I missed the second enrollment period on KLIPS. Can I still register for courses?
At the beginning of the semester, the allocation of remaining spots takes place. Seminar spots are limited (usually max. 20/25 spots). During this phase, you can still apply for a spot, but there is no guarantee that you will be admitted. Attend the first session of the course and discuss your participation options with the instructors.
This does not apply to mandatory courses in Basic Modules 1 and 2 or lecture courses. Add yourself to the enrollment wish list on KLIPS, and a fixed spot will be assigned manually.
How do I choose a field of specialization?
Basic Module 1 and Basic Module 2 form the shared core curriculum. Completing these orientation modules does not yet require a decision for one or two of the four fields of specialization (Classical Archaeology, Archaeology of the Roman Provinces, Prehistory, Egyptology).
The choice of specialization is made in KLIPS by selecting subsequent modules (specialization modules, advanced modules, and supplementary modules). The selection is confirmed at the end of the semester with both the choice and the allocation of a grade for a lecture course, seminar, etc., in one of these fields.
Switching fields of specialization is generally possible. Please contact your academic advisor for assistance.
Choosing one archaeological field of specialization is referred to as the single-major BA Profile A, while selecting two archaeological fields corresponds to the single-major BA Profile B. Additionally, there is a dual-major BA, which combines one archaeological specialization with an external subject (e.g., Ethnology, Geography, Musicology, etc.).
When should I decide on a field of specialization?
It is recommended to decide on a field of specialization by the second semester, ideally when selecting the introductory seminars for the respective fields (Basic Module 2). The choice should be finalized by the third semester at the latest. If you have any questions, please contact the academic advisors for the respective fields.
Will I lose my credit points if I change my field of specialization?
The modular structure is similar across all archaeological fields of specialization. In many cases, credit points can be transferred through slightly different module assignments and will not be lost.
How do I switch from a single-major BA to a dual-major BA or vice versa?
