Amiternum, an important city of the Sabines in the upper Aterno valley and birth place of Sallust, was conquered around 300 BC by the Romans and has then developed into one of the most important center in central Abruzzo. So far, an earlier hilltop settlement (S. Vittorio) as well as a larger city in the valley are known but research is sparse. From 2006 to 2013 comprehensive geophysical prospections and surveys were conducted and existing structures (amphitheater and theater) documented by hand, total station and laserscanning. From 2007 to 2012, stratigraphic sondages have been opened in Amiternum and the surrounding areas. The project aims to get a comprehensive overview over the settlement and its hinterland. The project has been in processing since the end of fieldwork in 2013 with processing campaigns of the finds.
